Welcome to

Millfield Community

Nursery School and Childcare

Welcome to our website. Here at Millfield Community Nursery School and Childcare we are fortunate to have an experienced staff team who find the minds of young children fascinating.

We are a local authority maintained nursery school with qualified and experienced teachers, early years practitioners and support staff.

We all work together to ensure that we provide a safe and stimulating environment. An environment which promotes learning through play; an ethos of respecting each child’s individuality as they learn, grow and develop at their own rate.

We have a strong commitment to ensuring that all our families are welcome and feel a sense of ownership and belonging. We pride ourselves of providing an environment ‘Where every child fits'.

We have a strong commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment where children, parents and staff feel secure, protected and valued. We follow the EYFS Framework and also focus on developing the personal characteristics, attitudes and dispositions needed to be a 21st century learner.

Children have access to a range of first-hand experiences, which fosters their all-round development.
Each child is encouraged and supported in pursuing and extending his or her learning interests. We want the children to become caring, confident, independent learners who experience a real ‘joy of learning’.

We have strong links in our local community and we are part of Sunderland Nursery school’s
Partners in Pedagogy working together to inspire and lead early years education through research and innovative practice.

I hope this website can answer any questions you have. However, I am happy to speak to you personally to help with any queries or give you more information.

Shelagh Morpeth, Headteacher

Meet the Chair of Governors

Hello I’m Mike Wooler and I’m very pleased and proud to be the Chair of Governors at Millfield Community Nursery School after being a governor since March 2014 and previously being the Chair through 2016 and up to September 2017. We governors support and challenge the school to be the best it can be and we work on a voluntary basis to offer a range of personal experience and skills to help the school. Although now retired my own background includes an enjoyable thirty eight year career in Education as a teacher, head teacher and school improvement partner in London, Buckinghamshire and since 1989 back

in my home city of Sunderland. Since boyhood I’ve also enjoyed strong Pallion links originally through St. Luke’s Church and youth club.

It’s a pleasure to work with fellow governors and the excellent staff to develop a school full of energy and very well led by Shelagh Morpeth, a head teacher with a passionate and expert understanding of the very best practice in Early Years Education. In these complex and challenging financial times we also have Sarah Robinson who, as the school’s business manager with a finger on the pulse of many rapid changes, is central to our continuing success.  All other staff right across the school have responded with skill, enthusiasm and commitment to the current challenges facing early years education and focus very strongly on creating the best possible learning environment for all our children to become confident,

happy learners well supported by parents and carers.

We are a successful Nursery school at the heart of the Millfield Community and that is a precious resource which will continue to need your support as parents and carers especially in these financially challenging times. We look forward to working with you and talking with you as we all work to give our children the best possible start in life
